Building a
sustainable future.

Our approach to being a sustainable business.

We've really thought hard about what matters most – not just to us as a business, but to everyone we work with and who's part of our journey. That's why our Sustainability and Social Impact strategy is all about tackling the big stuff. We're putting our energy into three key areas:

  • Making the most of our resources and building a circular way of doing things.
  • Helping to end digital poverty by 2030.
  • Hitting net zero emissions by 2040.

We've set some big, exciting goals to make real change happen! To learn more about our strategy, visit our PLC site here.

Giving tech a longer life.

We know our customers are looking to reduce their impact on the environment, and it’s our job to make that easier. Join us on our mission to reduce waste and divert tech away from landfill. Here’s what we did last year:

8.1m

units of e-waste collected across our Group for reuse or recycling.

12m

active care services and tech insurance plans across the Group.

1.4m

repairs across our Group to keep tech working.

  • Newark repair centre.

Our Newark facility is pretty impressive! It's over 500,000 square feet and is one of Europe's largest repair centres. We're proud to have a team of more than 1,100 colleagues there, and they're busy – they repair, refurbish, or recycle nearly 3 million products annually.

  • Helping customers reduce their impact on the environment.

We want to make recycling customers old tech as simple as possible. Thanks to our 'Trade In' initiative, 65,000 products were traded in by our customers, and our 'Cash for Trash' scheme saw over 260k redemptions and saved customers a huge £1.3m in the last year.

Helping to end digital poverty by 2030.

Currys is committed to extending the lifespan of technology, and we're also dedicated to helping eliminate digital poverty by 2030. As part of this commitment, we partnered with the Learning Foundation in 2021 to launch the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) as a Founding Partner, a project that quickly grew into a leading initiative. In 2024, the Learning Foundation officially became the Digital Poverty Alliance, reflecting its success and impact.

  • Helping everyone have access to tech.

In May 2022, we launched the Tech4Families initiative with the aim of increasing access to digital devices and enhancing digital skills for families in disadvantaged communities. The scheme is funded by colleague and customer donations as well £1 donations made from each refurbished phone or laptop sold online. We have now provided laptops to over 2,000 families who didn’t have access to suitable devices. 85% of children who have received a laptop through the Tech4Families scheme were getting one for the first time.

Hitting net zero emissions by 2040.

We’re committed to being net zero carbon by 2040. We already procure renewable energy for all our UK properties and the wheels are in motion to move our vehicle fleet to run on electric or alternative fuels. And we’re working with suppliers and manufacturers to reduce the environmental impact of the tech we sell.

  • Sustainable fleet.

We're making significant strides with the introduction of our first fully electric HGV vehicle, projected to save approximately 21 tonnes of CO2e annually - the equivalent to a passenger flying a return trip from Paris to New York 21 times! In addition, some of our vans are now running on hydrotreated vegetable oil and bio-methane derived from food and animal waste at several of our CSCs. We’re also launching EV charging points at two of our regional distribution centres, reinforcing our commitment to a more sustainable future.

  • Initiatives for reducing emissions.

We're working hard to use less energy too! We're switching to LED lights and trying out dimmer settings, making our heating and cooling systems smarter, and keeping a closer eye on things with automated meters. Plus, we're moving towards cleaner energy by using renewable electricity and swapping out gas heating for heat pumps.
